In a first, WhatsApp is set to hire a country head for India operations. The messaging app put up an ad on its career page stating, “Seeking an exceptional individual to lead our efforts in India including products for people and businesses along with our interest in peer to peer payments.”
The is a first full-time hire for the company in India. The head of operations will lead product decisions and will be responsible for all partnership efforts - with partners and stakeholders in the country. This is a cross-functional responsibility as the India head is expected to “lead partnership efforts in the market, acting as a cross-functional leader across WhatsApp and Facebook teams,” stated the company on its website.
The hiring comes close on the heels of WhatsApp announcing a UPI-based, peer-to-peer payments service in India.
WhatsApp has more than a billion users in over 180 countries. According to Statista, WhatsApp had over 200 million users in India as on February 2017, making it the largest market for the company.
